About Mastrad
At Mastrad, we specialize in designing, manufacturing, and distributing creative and innovative kitchen utensils. For over 25 years, we have been bringing our French savoir-faire and the art de l’utile (art of utility) to kitchens around the world—and we intend to continue to years to come.
The Art of utility since 1994
In 1994, Mathieu Lion, our founder and CEO, invented a truly revolutionary bar of soap that could really take the heat in the kitchen. This practical, long-lasting soap, which he named Déos, was made from stainless steel and eliminated dirt and odors through an innovative redox reaction. It was an instant hit, and the first of many successes. And thus Mastrad was born. Since then, we’ve continued to innovate to bring smart, beautiful, safe, and enjoyable tools to your kitchen.
Putting ourselves in your aprons
When we’re designing our products, we begin with our customers. We imagine you at work in your kitchens, and then we think about what we could do to make your lives easier—so you never lose your taste for cooking. We think about those of you who might be short on space or time. We think about the perfectionists, the parents, the beginners, and the pros. Sometimes, we find a little detail no one had ever thought of before. Other times, we come up with something completely new.
Why settle for ugly when something can be beautiful?
At Mastrad, we stand out by blending ingenuity and ergonomics with a true sense of aesthetics. We don’t see any reason why a useful object can’t be beautiful, too. We’re not going to lie, we’re pretty proud that some of our designs have been exhibited at the MoMA in New York. If you have a sharp eye, you might’ve even caught our Déos soap in the Star Wars trilogy (you read that right!). No matter what we’re designing, we follow three key principles: bright colors, clean lines, and great materials.
From the drawing board to the cutting board
We design all our products in-house at our Paris headquarters. Whenever Mathieu Lion or another member of the Mastrad creative team cooks up a new idea, our engineers and designers usually develop it on-site before making a prototype, then testing and retesting. Once we manufacture a new product, we do another battery of quality tests. We invest more than 7% of our profits in R&D with a focus on the use of new materials.
“Hey, we’re on TV!”
You’ve probably already seen some of our best-sellers without even realizing it: our Mastrad whipped cream dispenser, our Déos soap, the classic silicone oven mitt, and more. Since Mastrad was founded, we’ve patented 20 inventions and more than 200 designs, from our silicone molds with their unique rigid handles to the one-handed opening mechanism for our Express tongs.
Our kitchen utensils have received more than 50 prizes and awards from cooking and design professionals and are loved as much by amateur cooks as by world-class chefs. Television audiences can see our products regularly on shows like Top Chef and Le Meilleur Pâtissier, and we are thrilled to see that the culinary blogosphere likes them, too!
It all boils down to innovation, and thank goodness for that!
Today, Mastrad has a full-time team of 40 people across three subsidiaries in France, the US, and Hong Kong. We manufacture and distribute more than 400 products in over 50 countries, particularly in France and the US. A lot has changed since we set up shop in the ’90s, but for us—and for you, too—there are still so many things to discover in the kitchen, and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves!
